In an increasingly polarised world, we are losing the ability to listen to one another; to imagine the world from another’s vantage point. With the podcast, On the Contrary by IDR (OTC), we at IDR are attempting to change this. In each episode, listeners get to be a fly on the wall in a conversation between two people with different world views—from business, government, civil society, and academia—who are otherwise unlikely to be in such a discussion together. The host chats with guests as they share their diverse experiences, perspectives, and expertise on an issue—gender, climate change, caste, mental health, and more. The goal is to get people to explore their similarities and differences, so that the listeners gain a deeper understanding of some of the most pressing issues of our time, as they learn from people with informed, yet contrasting, perspectives on a topic.

In season 4, we dove deep into the most serious crisis of our times–climate change. In each of the six episodes of the season, two climate experts discussed the interplay between the climate emergency and gender; livelihoods; technology; finance; and agriculture. The aim was to provide the audience with a well-rounded perspective on the various aspects of the climate emergency so that they leave the conversation with a more nuanced understanding of the subject. The episodes were curated to help demystify the climate emergency for listeners while simultaneously communicating the magnitude of the crisis, how it permeates all aspects of our lives, and potential solutions that have worked in different contexts.
