The ‘Gas Addiction’ is a series of three videos which traces Italy’s energy history over the last 30 years to understand the historical reasons behind the current energy mix, which is heavily skewed towards fossil fuels. After privatisations and the growing influence of energy multinationals in the country’s politics, ministers and companies still travel to countries where there are no rights or democracy, in order to find new suppliers.
More than 40 per cent of the country’s energy needs now depend on methane, and it is not the cut in Russian supplies that followed the war that has cured this dependence. However, the cost of renewables goes down year by year, so much so that decarbonisation is the cheapest as well as the cleanest route. In the last video a proactive note, with directions to Europe on how to take a new path towards a just and renewable future.
