The Internet and its supporting systems (ICT) contribute to greenhouse gas emissions with 900 million tons of CO2 each year. The ICT sector is predicted to consume 20 per cent of the world’s total energy by 2030. At the same time, 90% of data created is a waste – it’s data that will never be accessed after its creation. This means we produce and will produce millions of tons of CO2 and contribute to climate warming for nothing. Majority of people think that the digital world is separate from the physical one and it has no real impact. It’s not true. Sending an email, taking photos, streaming videos, creating files, backing up – each digital move consumes energy and creates CO2 contributing to climate warming. Project is an excellent initiative to involve millions of people in the climate change topic – the simple step of deleting files will lead to a larger understanding that everybody’s actions count.

Digital Cleanup Day takes place every third Saturday annually all around the world. The Digital Cleanup Day programme was launched by Let’s Do It World in 2020. So far there have been 4 Digital Cleanup Day´s taking place each year. The last one took place on 5th June 2023. During 4 years people from 115 countries (mostly from France, Indonesia, United States, Estonia, Germany, United Kingdom) and 700 companies deleted more than 4 233 264 GB of data. Several large digital, electronic and telecommunications companies have joined in with the campaign. With this action, people eliminated 3633 tons of CO2. Digital Cleanup Day that fills the most important gap – enabling a greener future without contributing to climate warming nor destroying life on Earth.
